What is SUV program?
The Start-Up Visa program is an immigration stream provided by the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship of Canada) where start-up founders/immigrant entrepreneurs may apply to become established in Canada. If all eligibility criteria are met, applicants can operate their start-up and obtain permanent residency in Canada.
What is a start-up?
Start-ups are businesses that are designed to grow very quickly. They usually are benefiting from the technology advancements, and leveraging the skills, expertise and the knowledge of the founding team, rather than relying on any other resources. Start-ups are usually innovative, or techy solutions to a problem.
Who can apply?
In order to apply applicants must have a clear background check, approved medical exam, and a minimum general IELTS of band 5. Nevertheless, based on our experience and assessing hundreds of start-ups we’d like to work with applicants with sufficient levels of education and work experience. In case of SUV approval, the whole accompanying family members of the main applicants (spouse and children below 22 years old) can apply for permanent residency in Canada as well.
How long does SUV take?
This number has never been specifically determined as it’s totally up to IRCC and it’s totally confidential. However, currently it takes about 12 months to 18 months to be issued.
Who are the designated institutions?
There are several institutions that are designated by IRCC in order to approve the start-ups eligibility for SUV. Start-up founders must pitch their idea to those institutions, and receive a letter of support. That means that institutions support the Start-Up throughout their journey.
Different Types Of Institutions
Business Incubators
These institutions invest their time and their knowledge in early stage start-ups. Usually, start-ups that are in the ideation, conceptual, commitment, or validation stages will go through business incubator programs. In these programs, start-ups will have the ability to pitch their business to several investors to secure investments. Start-ups benefit from the incubators knowledge, mentorship, consultation, expertise, and most importantly, their connections.
Angel Investors
Angel investors are named appropriately as they invest their money, knowledge, and resources into early stage start-ups. Start-ups that have a proof of concept will be able to present themselves in front of an angel investor for investment in their business. Their investments are usually between $50,000 to $500,000. The purpose of their investment is to kick-start the business and ignite momentum. Start-ups benefit from angel investor’s capital resources, knowledge, and connections.
Venture Capitalists (VCs)
Venture capitalists (VCs) invest their capital resources with the expectation of favourable returns. They invest anywhere between a few hundred thousand dollars upto millions of dollars. It is very rare that a VC invests in early start-up. Instead, they usually invest in scaled and established start-ups. At this stage, start-ups do not typically seek business advice, as they are already experts in the field. Start-ups benefit from VC’s large capital resources.
